Newcastle city centre has seen a complete rejuvenation in the last decade with much greater links with Gateshead, south of the river; in fact it’s almost impossible now to say Newcastle without adding Gateshead on too. Think along the lines of Buda and Pest!!
Billions has been pumped into the city centre and surrounding area with the eye-catching Millennium Bridge, allowing even better access to Gateshead whilst architectural developments like the Sage and the Baltic offer arts and culture to a growing tourist trade and residents alike.
The result is a stylish, modern and totally cosmopolitan city, that’s ready willing and able to host your stag dos in Newcastle. With activities from quad biking to clay pigeon shooting and stag friendly bars to lap dancing.

Newcastle certainly has had a chequered history and was founded in the 2nd century during the Roman occupation. Hadrian famously built his wall to prevent the Scots invading and certain parts still remain today in Newcastle. It spans the width of Britain and finishes at the roman fort in Wallsend – literally meaning the wall’s end. Does what it says on the tin!
After various battles in Anglo-Saxon times William the Conqueror’s son built a wooden castle here in 1080 and from then on the town was known as New Castle.
Newcastle has had its fair share of rebellions and successfully defended itself three times in the 14th century against the Scots. However it was in the 16th century that the rivalry between Geordies and Mackems started with the royal act that restricted the shipment of coal from Tyneside to Newcastle quayside. This gave Newcastle a monopoly on coal trade and hence the phrase “coals to newcastle” was coined. However, while Newcastle prospered their near neighbours, Sunderland, suffered and this Tyneside/ Wearside rivalry still exists today. It’s usually most vocal when they play the derby match at St James Park – where the chants can be heard across the city, so listen out for them on your Newcastle stag parties!
Shipbuilding and engineering became the backbone of Newcastle’s prosperity in the 19th century and it was the powerhouse of the Industrial Revolution in the UK. Innovations which would change the world started here such as the electric light bulb by Joseph Swan – (not Thomas Edison as the Americans would have it) and Stephenson’s Rocket, safety lamps and the invention of the steam turbine which would in turn lead to marine propulsion and the production of cheap electricity.
So you see, Newcastle really has a rich history of grit and determination which is why, when the shipbuilding trade and engineering fizzled out in the second half of the 20th century, Newcastle really had to dig deep to reinvent itself all over again.
But don’t be expecting grim northerners with frowns on their sour faces – no way – think chic and sophisticated, trend setting and high flying with the best in bars and clubs and the funkiest sounds around. Guys, we guarantee, you are going to be seriously impressed on your stag party Newcastle.
