Let Loose Your Newcastle Bride To Be

So what can you expect on your Newcastle hen weekends?

The North East was hard hit in the past with closure of the mines and the end of the shipbuilding business – but just like true grit northerners that they are, Newcastle has risen like a phoenix from the fire and is now one of the top places to visit for everything cultural and down right good fun for hen parties! So good, in fact, that the Rough Guide named it top spot for arts and nightlife. From a night out on Grey Street or a trip along the many bars on Osbourne Road, we will give you our best Newcastle hen party ideas.

Restaurants for Newcastle Hen Parties

Revolution

Absolutely amazing venue for drinks at the start of the night try Revolution on Collingwood Street near the Station. A luxury conversion of a former bank with 30 foot high ornate ceilings and original artwork, it’s certainly a memorable venue for your hen night Newcastle. With food served all day, DJ’s mixing it up with hip hop and house 7 days a week, over 90 different vodkas to choose from and booths that you can pre-book we reckon you may never want to leave!

Vegetarian

Before you hit the clubs and pubs big style we reckon you should line your stomach first! Newcastle has some of the most varied eating establishments in the North and everyone’s tastes are well catered for. Vegetarians will be well pleased with The Sky Apple, Heaton Road. It’s an easy-going establishment with a BYO (Bring Your Own) policy and a nominal corkage fee. Great news if you want to bring your own wine with you!

Although we have only listed one vegetarian restaurant it is fair to say that all the restaurants mentioned serve vegetarian options so you won’t go hungry on your Newcastle hen party.

Italian Restaurants

For Italian food lovers try Secco Ristorante, Pilgrim Street. Run by 3 sibling Italians it celebrates the fusion of local fare with classic Italian staple food and received the Hardens Remy Award. Pretty good when you consider that it is one of only ten to win the award in the UK. Another trio of great choices for fabulous Italian food include Topolino, Insieme and Gusto Italian

Chinese, Japanese and Asian Restaurants

For a lively, welcoming environment you can’t go wrong with Chilli Padi, Leazes Park Road. Don’t be put off by the name as its not all chilli, they do other fabulous Malaysian and Pan-Asian curries and noodles.

Then, of course, there is always Chinatown. The Arch on Brunswick is a long running restaurant with old-school decor and a menu of Chinese dishes, close to Newcastle United’s home ground. You may struggle to choose a venue here for your unforgettable weekend, as there are so many – we recommend Hanahana and Fujiyama both serving Japanese food. The chefs put on crowd-pleasing display ay teppanyaki stations of traditional Japanese cooking so you are entertained while you eat.

Further oriental delights in Chinatown include King Neptune, which has appeared in the Egon Ronay Guides and also operates a BYO policy and specialises in Peking style seafood. Other Chinese restaurants include Landmark Oriental, which fits the bill with both a la carte and buffet menus.

Newcastle Facts

Newcastle Brown Ale aka Bottle of Dog / Broon Ale / Newcy Broon / Toon Ale has been brewed on Tyneside since 1890. Around 600 bottles of it thunder through the bottling hall every minute. Go on try some!

Stottie Cakes (pronounced “sto’y keeak”) or just plain stotty are a flat round bread fabulous split in half and filled with ham and pease pudding. What’s that I hear you scream! Pease pudding. It’s made from split peas and has a hummus like texture and a mild flavour. It dates back to times when meat was scarce and the pease pudding filled you up. It may sound disgusting but it tastes great.

Getting around Newcastle

It goes with out saying that, as Newcastle is so compact, everywhere is within staggering distance and as a group of hens you are going to have to make sure you dress reasonably smartly – no trainers or sportswear and you should get in to most bars and clubs. All clubs and pubs have happy hour and drink promotions so your only problem will be pacing yourself so all the girls can actually remember your own Newcastle hen party!

Understanding Geordie

Geordies are also down to earth, smashing people and nowhere else in the UK will you be treated so well. Here is some help on how to decipher the Geordie lingo:

“dead” is “dede” “cow” is “coo” and “strong” is “strang”.

Ok so they are pretty easy

So the next few have their roots in Scottish dialect:- “pretty” is “bonny” “come on” is “howay” and “hadaway” is “go away” or “you’re kidding”.

So far so good

However some words seem to be only used in Newcastle and the surrounding areas such as:- “food” which is “bait” “dirty” is “hacky” and “throw is “hoy”.

Now it gets really interesting

Put into sentences its sounds fantastic! Try these sentences for size
Geordie:- Are ye dancing or wot?
English:- Can I have the last dance?

Geordie:- Howpet is thata belt roond ya skort ora skort roond ya belt?
English:- Aren’t you a bit chilly?

Geordie:- Meynd thee divvent stomp in thon kakky.
English:- Careful you don’t tread in the dog dirt

Geordie:- Ahm gan yem
English:- I’m off home
