Hen Heaven Shopping

On any tick list of things to do on a hen weekend Shopping, you might meet one of the Geordie Shore cast in search of an outrageous outfit for a memorable night out. You see, Geordies like a bargain and they also like their bling so here you’re going to be spoilt with a whole wealth of shopping from bargains to top designers.

Newcastle is very easy to navigate as the Metro (one of the UK’s most efficient transport systems) has stations dotted all over the Newcastle and Gateshead area. They are cheap, quick and safe and used by everybody throughout the day. The city itself is so compact that you may find you want to walk everywhere anyway.

Eldon Square

So let’s get cracking and flex that credit card and where better to start than Eldon Square in the heart of Newcastle. Home to John Lewis and Fenwick Department store they are stacked full of designer names. Cutting edge fashion from G-STAR and RebelRebel are found at Eldon Square too and you can link through to Eldon Garden. Here you will find independent shops such as Flirtatious, a chance, maybe, for you to buy luxury handmade lingerie by UK designers (we feel sure your stag will approve!) There are plenty of cafes and eating spots for you and the girls to chill out and put the shopping bags down for a while on your hen weekend Newcastle.

Around Town

Newcastle is also home to great designer stores too. Karen Millen can be found on Market Street and also at the Metro Centre Gateshead with her individual style she is one of the most highly recognised brands around. Or head down Osborne Road in Jesmond, to the award winning JulesB for mens and womenswear. Here they stock Twenty8Twelve as well as Oska, Backstage and Bottega di Brunella and more. Skirt on High Bridge Street stocks Paul and Joe Sister and Ella Moss as well as less well-known international designers. Their pieces while unusual and cool are guaranteed to stand the test of time. Also on High Bridge Street check out Union for Retro and Attica for Vintage styles.

Metro Centre

You could take the short bus/rail journey to the Metro Centre at Gateshead just 10 minutes from Newcastle. One of the original out of town centre shopping experiences and one of the UK's largest shopping centres, it continues to roll with the times, and is now home to over 300 stores including All Saints, Mango, Zara and Faith and, luckily for you, there are plenty of cafes to rest your weary feet on your hen party Newcastle.

Newcastle Markets

Also worth a look are a couple of markets. Grainger Market trading since 1835 is now housed in a Grade 1 listed building and whilst it has predictable stalls such as butchers and greengrocers you will also find some real treasures too. Every Sunday from 10am to 4pm Armstrong Bridge, which spans Jesmond Dene, is host to an arts and crafts fair. This beautiful iron bridge donated to Newcastle in 1883 by Sir William Armstrong is now closed to traffic and provides a stunning backdrop for this market and local pubs offer a good place to stop for a Sunday lunch on your Newcastle hen nights.

Travel around Newcastle

Arrive at Newcastle International Airport or let the train take the strain arriving at Newcastle central station. For those travelling north by car, the Angel of the North, marks your arrival and once you are crossing the Tyne Bridge then you know for sure that you are in Geordie Shore land. Ready for your hen group to enjoy an absolutely amazing hen do.

7 bridges including the famous Tyne Bridge and Millennium Bridge, link Newcastle and Gateshead so don’t be surprised if you keep popping back and forth over the various bridges during your Newcastle hen parties to visit the various attractions. The Baltic is a former grain house and now houses contemporary art exhibitions. It is the largest gallery of its kind and as it has no permanent exhibition you are guaranteed a unique experience each time you visit. The whole idea is that you relax, learn, have fun and discover some new ideas. Oh, and the best bit is that admission is free and while you are there you can chill out even more as there is a café bar and a rooftop restaurant with great views of the city.

Gateshead Event Venues

No need for a party bus to transport you around town, the quay side is only a short distance from the city centre. In this party city you are bound to bump into stag parties in search of the Diamond strip and the next beer on Dean street.

The Sage, again on the Gateshead side of the River Tyne is also a venue worth a visit on your hen weekend Newcastle. Designed by the award winning Norman Foster (who incidentally designed Wembley Stadium), it fills a gap on the map for music venues in the North of England. Home to the Northern Sinfonia (that’s violins and cellos to you and me!) you are likely to catch them rehearsing if you wander in during the day. The great thing about the Sage is you don’t have to be attending a concert or performance to use the facilities. You could organise a lunch in the Sir Michael Straker Café or try the Brasserie, or any one of the 5 bars and soak up the atmosphere while you admire the views. Just another idea to consider for your hen night Newcastle with all the ladies.

The Sage is also home to Summertyne, a festival now in its 3rd year and growing. Late night Latin Dance Party and Caribbean sounds with acoustic performances combine to make a party to remember. Worth a look on your hen weekend Newcastle because some of the events are free.

Don’t let all this culture go to your head though girls – remember you are here to celebrate the end of an era but it’s fair to say that the emergence of the Baltic and the Sage have almost turned Newcastle from the party capital to the arty capital of the north!!

Newcastle Horse Racing

One of the best Newcastle hen do ideas is a day at the Races? On the site of the original Blaydon Races is High Gosforth Park, Newcastle Racecourse the home to the Northumberland Plate. On race day there are free buses from Newcastle city centre or a taxi takes about 20 minutes. So remember to pack your best hats and prepare to have a flutter on your Newcastle hen parties.

FAQ

How do I surprise my bride on her hen do?

Depending on the bride's personality it could be a fun idea to include a few surprises. But remember she only gets one hen night so think carefully.
Should the hen party be a surprise or arranged by the bride? With most hen weekends, the bride is commonly consulted on the basics, the date, time, invite list, and where it will start. The degree of freedom the bridesmaids get to go off piste, depends on the chances of awakening the bridezilla.
